The expanded Eastern bypass will be commissioned soon by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), the road is 87 per cent complete and the President is expected to commission it as one of his legacy projects before he leaves office.

However, KURA Director General Silas Kinoti said State House has not set a date for the commissioning of the road.

“By end of the month, the main carriageway will be open to traffic. The KURA Board inspected the road on Wednesday and is satisfied with the work,” Kinoti said.

He added that the expanded road has witnessed increased traffic as people move to residential areas along the Eastern bypass.

“So far, there is reduced travel time to and from Thika road and Mombasa road,” he said.

The total length of the Eastern bypass is 32km.

The road forms a semicircle through the South-Eastern and Northeastern neighbourhoods of Nairobi.

It allows traffic from Mombasa destined for the Central Parts of Kenya to bypass Downtown Nairobi, thus reducing traffic congestion in the CBD.

The road is being constructed by China Communication Construction Company at Sh12.5 billion.
