Changes to National Assembly standing orders

The designation of political party whips would be considered under a substantive Standing Order.

Details have emerged of how the National Assembly will operate after the August election in a slight departure from the current tradition.

The aim is to make the House more efficient and operations more streamlined. Gender balance and coalition agreements would be considered.

A caucus of independent members is also proposed.

Incoming MPs must learn new ways of electing House leaders and the Speaker, as well as handling bills, and dealing with new committee structures.
