Pope Francis has appointed Most Reverend Philip Anyolo as the new Archbishop of the Nairobi Diocese.
Following his appointment, Archbishop Anyolo will replace Cardinal John Njue who retired in January after attaining the age of 75.
Njue served for 13 years.
"I have the pleasure and honour to inform you that Pope Francis has appointed the Most Reverend Philip Anyolo, presently Archbishop of Kisumu, as Archbishop of Nairobi," the statement announcing the appointment said.
He becomes the fifth Archbishop of Nairobi.
After Cardinal Njue’s retirement, the Archdiocese of Nairobi has been under the guidance of the Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau, serving as the Apostolic Administrator since January 4, 2021.
Prior to his appointment, Bishop Anyolo has been the Archbishop of Kisumu since November 15, 2018.
Bishop Anyolo hails from Tongaren, Bungoma and was ordained a priest on October 15, 1983.
He was installed the bishop of Kericho diocese on December 6, 1995, and was later transferred to the Homa Bay Diocese on May 23, 2003.
