Stephen Wangondu Kinini, a man accused of hiring attackers to murder his 32-year-old son in Nyeri, will remain in police custody for five more days pending conclusion of investigations.

Police have established Kinini paid the murderers Sh160,000 to kill his son.

Kinini and five other suspects - Geoffrey Waturi, Eddy Ngari, Charity Muchiri, James Mahinda Mwangi and Raphael Wachira - were arraigned at the Nyeri Law Courts with murder charges.

Nyeri principal magistrate Mathias Okuche on Friday gave for more time to detain the suspects as investigations continue.

Mwangi was killed and his body dumped at the gate of his home in Wedinga village in Mweiga, Nyeri county, on New Year's eve.

Nothing was robbed from him and his vehicle was found abandoned at his gate.

“So puzzling was the motive behind his murder that nothing had been stolen from him or his house, not even his Volkswagen Golf car beside which he lay lifeless,” DCI said in the statement.

The first suspect to be arrested on February 20 was James Mahinda, who works as a driver for Wang'ondu, after he was traced to Nairobi’s Githurai area.

Upon interrogation, he led officers to Matakani area in Embu, where Waturi and Ngari arrested and escorted to DCI offices in Nyeri.

Upon further investigations, detectives established that the three long-time friends had been hired by the deceased’s father on December 31, 2020 to murder his son at a fee of Sh160,000 following a family feud.

Mahinda was first given Sh20,000 and instructed to form a hit squad, upon which  he travelled to Embu on December 31 to fetch his accomplices.

He then briefed them on the mission at hand, the target's movement, his residence and the car he drove.

They then proceeded to buy the murder weapon at a local hardware store in Mweiga

They then got into contact with Muchiri and waited for Mwangi in the dead of the night and allegedly killed him.
