KNH puts one patient in isolation ward over Coronavirus

A student from China with coronavirus symptoms has been admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital.

The Hospital's Communication Manager Hezekiel Gikambi confirmed that the patient has been isolated.

"We are not denying ..but the ministry will issue a statement later in the day. We  have the suspected case and we are continuing with tests," he said,

In a statement on Tuesday, Kenya Airways confirmed that a passenger who traveled on one of our services from Guangzhou to Nairobi on January 28, 2020 has, as a precautionary measure, been quarantined at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

"Decision to quarantine the passenger was reached by the Kenya Government port health authorities stationed at JKIA," KQ said.

"The Kenyan passenger had been cleared to travel by the China Port health authorities at the Guangzhou Airport."

Upon being cleared, our staff notifies the Kenya Government Port health authorities who then take precautionary measures including further screening on arrival.

According to the World Health Organisation report released on Monday, the incubation period of the virus range from 2-10 days.

WHO report also said that a total of 2798 cases have been confirmed globally out of which 2741 is confirmed in China.

 Other countries where the virus has been confirmed are Japan with 4 cases, Republic of Korea 4, Viet Nam 2, Singapore 4, Australia 4, Malaysia 4, Thailand 5 and 5 cases in the United States of America.

PRECAUTION

 WHO has asked people to avoid close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections.

People should also wash their hands frequently especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment.

Also, avoid unprotected contact with farm or wild animals, people with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should practice cough etiquette.

The organisation has further asked people to enhance standard infection prevention and control practices in hospitals, especially in emergency departments within healthcare facilities.
