Police in Kakamega County have intercepted a private vehicle carrying 100 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa, leading to the arrest of one suspect and the launch of a manhunt for another.

The incident occurred on Sunday night at a routine roadblock manned by officers from Matungu Police Station.

According to police, the vehicle was flagged down, but the driver sped off, defying the order to stop. The suspects drove over spikes laid across the road, prompting a dramatic chase towards the Mayoni area.

Once the vehicle was brought to a halt, officers conducted a search and recovered sacks of cannabis weighing approximately 100 kilogrammes.

The drugs were seized and secured as exhibits at Matungu Police Station.

Two men had been on board during the incident. One was arrested on the spot, while the other escaped and is being pursued. Police said efforts are underway to track down the fugitive.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said: “The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to combating the trade in narcotic drugs and calls on public to continue supporting its operations by providing information.”

The arrest comes just days after another anti-narcotics operation in Nyandarua County.

On 11 September, officers acting on intelligence intercepted a black Nissan X-Trail at Soko Mjinga along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

The vehicle, which had two occupants, was escorted to Magumu Police Station for inspection. A thorough search uncovered several sacks filled with a dry, green substance suspected to be narcotics.

“Upon a thorough search, officers recovered multiple sacks of the suspected narcotics,” police said in a statement.

The two suspects were arrested and remain in custody as investigations continue. They are expected to face charges related to drug possession and trafficking.

The NPS commended the swift response of the officers in both operations and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding communities from the effects of narcotics. Investigations into the source and intended destination of the seized drugs are ongoing.
