West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has commissioned a newly
established Emergency Operations Center in Kapenguria town as part of measures
to strengthen disaster preparedness and response in the county.
Speaking during the launch, Kachapin said the county was investing in a well-equipped and staffed disaster management unit to serve residents more effectively in times of crisis.
The event was also graced by Kenya Red Cross Society secretary general Ahmed Idris, who assured continued support, noting that the organisation contributed to the development of the centre.
“This centre and our partnership with West Pokot are commitments to respond on time and support communities during emergencies. Counties and institutions must continue improving their disaster response capacity,” Idris said.
Governor Kachapin described the facility as a turning point for West Pokot.
“This centre will serve as a hub where multidisciplinary teams can monitor risks, coordinate responses and mount timely interventions. It reflects our determination to move from reactive crisis management to proactive resilience building,” he said.
The centre, which will be run by the County Disaster Risk Management Unit in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, is equipped to handle early warning information, coordinate emergencies and foster inter-agency collaboration.
Kachapin added that the county would work with national government departments and the private sector to ensure all support systems for the centre function smoothly.
“All departments will work in a coordinated manner so that we respond effectively whenever the need arises,” he said.
