Phase II of the Homa Bay Pier redevelopment featuring construction of a modern ferry ramp is advancing steadily, marking a major milestone in the government's efforts to unlock economic opportunities along the Lake Victoria waterfront through investments in the Blue Economy.

The project, under the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), is progressing steadily with supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), with most of the structural works already completed.

Designed to facilitate efficient roll-on/roll-off ferry operations, the new ferry ramp features an engineered 30-degree gradient that will enable the smooth movement of passengers, vehicles and cargo across Lake Victoria.

The development also includes the construction of terminal buildings, warehouses, a ferry waiting bay and a permanent administrative office aimed at enhancing operations and service delivery at the facility.

According to Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration, who oversees coordination and implementation of national government projects, said the project represents a significant step in transforming Homa Bay into a key transport and commercial hub within the Lake Victoria region.

"A few years ago, the Homa Bay lakefront stood as a neglected swampland, underutilised and disconnected. Today, it is being deliberately reclaimed and reimagined into a vibrant, integrated economic zone anchored on the redevelopment of the Homa Bay Pier," said Omollo.

He noted that while the main structures have been completed, final works, including electrical wiring, painting and landscaping, are currently underway ahead of commissioning.

Once operational, the PS noted that the upgraded pier and ferry ramp are expected to enhance connectivity between Homa Bay and major destinations across the lake region, including Kisumu, Mbita, Siaya, Busia and Migori counties, as well as islands such as Mfangano.

“The facility is also expected to strengthen regional trade by providing direct links to Entebbe and Jinja in Uganda and Mwanza in Tanzania, opening up new opportunities for commerce, tourism and the movement of goods across East Africa”.

The government says the project is part of a broader strategy to harness the economic potential of Lake Victoria by improving transport infrastructure and supporting businesses that depend on the lake.

To protect the investment and ensure smooth operations, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is enhancing maritime security coordination around the port area.

Omollo said the department is working closely with relevant agencies to strengthen enforcement and maintain safety within the port precinct as the facility moves towards full commissioning.

The redevelopment of Homa Bay Pier is expected to stimulate economic growth in the region by improving access to markets, reducing transport costs and creating opportunities for traders, fishermen and other businesses that rely on lake transport.

With the final phase of works underway, residents and stakeholders are optimistic that the modernised facility will position Homa Bay as a strategic gateway for domestic and regional trade on Lake Victoria
