Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi has hailed the energisation of the Awendo–Isebania Transmission Line as a transformative step toward improving electricity reliability across South Nyanza.

"This investment reflects our commitment to equitable access to power, especially in previously underserved regions," Wandayi said.

"With the energisation of this line, we are strengthening the backbone of South Nyanza’s economy from hospitals and schools to factories and small businesses."

The CS said the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum is committed to indiscriminately upscale the national electricity connectivity to ensure a just and inclusive energy.

The 28-kilometre transmission line, developed by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company, will improve power supply in Migori county and nearby towns, including Isebania, Kehancha and Masaba.

“The transformer is currently on soak and customers in Masaba will on June 7, be connected to the grid.”

The project, valued at Sh1.32 billion, was jointly funded by the Government of Kenya and the Exim Bank of China.

It also included the construction of a new 132kV substation in Isebania and an extension of the existing Awendo substation. China Aerospace Construction Group company Limited carried out the work.

Prior to this upgrade, much of the region relied on a weak 33/11kV line stretching from Awendo over 26 kilometres, leading to frequent power outages and voltage instability due to increasing demand.

With a new bulk supply point established at Masaba, distribution lines have been shortened, promising fewer disruptions and improved power quality.

Ketraco managing director Eng John Mativo described the energisation as a pivotal development for the region.

“By introducing a new bulk supply point at Masaba, we’re significantly reducing line losses and improving voltage stability. This is a game-changer for Migori and the greater South Nyanza,” Mativo said.

Key institutions expected to benefit include the Sony Sugar Factory, Migori County Referral Hospital, Getonyanya Sweet Potatoes Factory and the Isebania One Border Post.

The line also promises to bolster local industries, create an enabling environment for investment and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.

The energised line will tap into power from both the Sondu hydroelectric plant and geothermal stations in Olkaria, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable energy supply.

This development aligns with Kenya’s broader energy strategy of reducing regional disparities in power access while fostering industrial growth and job creation.
