The Kisumu Muslim Association has supported Persons with Disabilities (PLWDs) through a donation of 50 wheelchairs, courtesy of Qatar Charity.
Speaking during the handover at Jamia Mosque in Kisumu, member Abdul Kadir said the donation was intended for all needy individuals in the community, regardless of their religious background.
“We are distributing these wheelchairs based on need. The support is meant for the people of Kisumu, and not limited to any particular group,” said Kadir, noting that the number of vulnerable cases continues to rise.
He thanked Qatar Charity for stepping in to assist, adding that the association is keen to partner with more organisations to meet growing demand.
Kadir called on the National Council for Persons with Disabilities to strengthen its outreach, saying many people still lack access to critical support.
Kisumu Kadhi Kassim Ratori echoed the sentiments, decrying the neglect often experienced by PLWDs.
He commended the initiative and encouraged more institutions to step up efforts to support people with mobility challenges.
“We welcome any donation that helps improve the lives of PWDs. It is our responsibility as a community to care for them,” Ratori said.
Association secretary general Rashid Hussein said efforts are underway to reach out to more charities and donors, as the needs of PWDs remain largely unmet.
“Many are suffering in silence. It’s our moral duty to look for support and bridge that gap,” Hussein said.
The Muslim community also expressed appreciation to President William Ruto for signing the Persons with Disabilities Bill into law, saying it is a step forward in ensuring inclusion and dignity for PWDs.
The wheelchair recipients expressed deep gratitude, sharing personal stories of the daily struggles they endure due to limited mobility.
The donation, they said, would significantly ease their burden and improve their quality of life.
