After sealing their slot in next year's Kenya Rugby Union (KRU)  Championship, Mombasa RFC are now targeting the Nationwide title on Saturday.

Mombasa will take on Jomo Kenyatta University Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Cougars at RFUEA grounds in the Nationwide League final.

Mombasa sealed a return to KRU Championship after edging Kitale RFC 8-0 while JKUAT Cougars overcame Moi University’s Arsonists 15-11 at  Juja to return to the second-tier league too.

Mombasa and Cougars will replace Eldoret RFC and Zetech Oaks, who were relegated to the third tier.

On Tuesday, Mombasa RFC coach Kevin Wambura said: “Last season, we fell short after losing to Daystar Falcons. We are happy to be back in the KRU Championship. Our target now is winning the KRU Nationwide trophy on Saturday. That will be the icing on the cake.”

Wambura said they will then embark on intense preparations for the KRU Championship.

“We have to prepare for a good championship campaign and see where we finish at the end of the season. As a club, we really need to get back to the top (Kenya Cup),” he noted.

Mombasa have gone full circle from Nationwide to Kenya Cup and back to Nationwide.

“We started the inaugural Championship league, made it to the final and qualified for Kenya Cup. We were then relegated to the Championship where we played for two seasons before we again dropped to the third tier. We are back to the Championship league and our target is the Kenya Cup,” said Wambura.
