Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya with a relative of the three men who were killed in a mob attack in Machakos/HANDOUTMwala MP Vincent Kawaya has condemned the alleged mob justice that led to the brutal killing of three young men in Machakos.
The trio, Kennedy Muthungu, 29, his younger brother Stanley Muthungu, 22, and their family friend Charles Mutiso, 25. were reportedly walking home after watching the UEFA Champions League final when a Probox driver allegedly knocked down one of them.
When the young men confronted him over the incident, the driver is alleged to have raised alarm and called boda boda operators, claiming that the trio were attempting to carjack him.
According to investigators, the claims triggered a violent response from boda boda riders and members of the public.
Within minutes, a mob descended on the three young men. They were beaten, doused with petrol and set ablaze, sustaining severe burns that ultimately claimed their lives.
Kawaya termed the incident barbaric and unacceptable, insisting that no Kenyan should lose their life through mob injustice.
He welcomed the arrest of the main suspect and maintained that all those involved in the killings must be identified, arrested and prosecuted.
"Those who participated in the killing of these innocent young men will face the full force of the law. Justice must be served for the victims and their families," said Kawaya.
He further urged residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to complete their investigations as the search for all those involved continues.
A Machakos court on Friday granted police 21 days to detain the main suspect.
The man was arraigned before Machakos Senior Principal Magistrate Betty Koech, who allowed an application by the prosecution seeking more time to complete investigations into the incident that occurred on the night of May 31, 2026.
According to court documents, investigators believe Mwenda allegedly knocked down one of the victims at around 3am before raising alarm and claiming he was being carjacked.
The prosecution told the court that the allegation triggered a violent response from nearby boda boda riders and members of the public, culminating in the mob attack on the three young men.
The victims sustained burns covering between 90 and 95 per cent of their bodies. Their remains were later collected by police and taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary, where they were initially recorded as unidentified persons.
For four days, relatives searched separately for the missing men before eventually discovering their bodies at the mortuary.
The postmortem revealed that the victims suffered extensive burns concentrated on the head and upper body.
Investigators have told the court they require additional time to obtain CCTV footage from the area, interview witnesses and gather further evidence to establish the circumstances that led to the killings.
