Ndaisi Kipanga (C) joins women in cutting a cake to mark Mother's Day at Athi River. Open-air market in Machakos County on May 10, 2026.
Women have been encouraged to join 'chamaas' so as to reduce depression.

Speaking during the International Mother's Day celebration in Mavoko, Machakos County, philanthropist Ndaisi Kipanga said studies show that 'chamas' for change programmes combine health education, peer support, and microfinance.

"I urge women to come together so that we celebrate the day meant to recognise the important role women play in the community," Ndaisi said.

Ndaisi said the peer support component is linked to lower stress and better health outcomes.

She donated cakes and bottles of soda to tens of women doing business at Mlolongo and Athi River open markets for Mother's Day.

Ndaisi, together with the women, cut the cakes and celebrated together.

They were joined by some men, youth and children who all expressed their gratitude for the roles which mothers play in society.

Ndaisi said she celebrated the day with mothers since, many times, the traders were forgotten when such celebrations were marked.

"It's important to remember women and thank them in the roles they are playing of raising children, fending for families and contributing to the national development," she said.

"As a mother, I am joining fellow mothers and people who qualify to be my mother. I have come so that we celebrate together and remind you that we love you as women even while at work. We understand your contribution in the country's development. Happy Mother's Day to all women," Ndaisi said.

She told women to be enduring even during tough times in their lives.

Ndaisi told women to unite and support one another.

"Join merry-go-rounds to reduce depression. Let's discuss our problems as women. I encourage you to join hands. Come together," Ndaisi said.

The traders thanked Ndaisi for celebrating the day with them.

Alice Kathini, a trader at Mlolongo market, said she had never seen a fellow woman organising such kinds of celebrations for them.

Kathini said Ndaisi reminded them of Mother's Day.

"I have eaten a cake and soda courtesy of Ndaisi. I am full. May she be blessed," Kathini said.

Molly Kamaliza said Ndaisi had enabled them to celebrate the day.

Kamaliza said most women in the informal sector, including herself, never celebrate such days.

Elizabeth Nduku, a trader at the Athi River open-air market, said more leaders should emulate Ndaisi's gesture.

Nduku said there is power in unity, hence echoing Ndaisi's call for women to join 'chamaas'.
