Kirinyaga residents have expressed concern following increased church break-ins and theft of items worth millions of shillings.
Two ACK churches have been burglarised in the last three weeks, with the thieves stealing items crucial to the running of the churches.
On Sunday night, thugs broke into ACK Gatwe Church where they stole three monitors, a console, a sound system and five bottles of altar wine.
Rev David Warui said he received information that the church had been broken into and was shocked to find numerous items missing.
“We held two services on Sunday after which we held a meeting and left the church around 4pm,” he said.
Warui said the thugs broke a window to access the church and that they then stole Sh9,500 from his office.
Some items were strewn all over the compound and others were found in the nearby tea farms.
He appealed to the burglars to return the items or risk attracting a curse upon themselves and their families.
Cyrus Njue, the church’s warden, said a neighbour called to inform him that there was someone inside the church on Monday morning.
On getting there, Njue was shocked to find the church’s security guard tied up and left in the reverend’s office.
“The doors had been closed, so I had to force my way in. The watchman’s hands and feet had been tied. I was shocked to find so many things had been stolen. Almost all items used for preaching were missing”.
The guard revealed that he was tied up by three men. Njue said the church’s operations will be disrupted without the stolen items.
On May 26, burglars broke into ACK St Matthew’s Mutithi Church in Mwea West subcounty and stole several items.
They stole a piano, ate the holy sacrament and drank altar wine that remained from the church service held the previous day.
The disturbing scene was discovered by choir members who went to the church for practice and found items scattered all over the church.
Vice chairperson Eliud Githaka said concerns had been raised over the security guard accused of sleeping on the job.
