Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has pledged to support  Shujaa's preparations ahead of the World Seven Series later in the year.

At a dinner ceremony to congratulate the Kenya Sevens team, who have been qualified for the World Seven Series core status, Namwamba said they will invest heavily in the team regarding resources.

“Whatever you need to get ready for the HSBC Series tell us and we will avail," said Namwamba.

The Cabinet Secretary thanked the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) for entrusting the leadership of Shujaa to local coaches.

“I commend Alexander Mutai and the team for having a local technical bench led by Kevin Wambua. It's not a must we source for foreign coaches all the time. Let us give our local coaches a chance to prove themselves,” added Namwamba.

He challenged the team to go for a podium position at the Paris Olympics.

“I believe you have what it takes to challenge the big nations in Paris and I wish you all the best,” said Namwamba.

He also credited the KRU leadership for turning around the fortunes of the sport in 12 months.

"When I came into office, rugby was in shambles with issues of unpaid allowances and poor performance. Now in a record year,  Mutai and his team have done a commendable job," he observed.

He asked other federations to select teams on merit and put the right structures in place just the way rugby has done.

“ The challenge to other federations is to be fair and pick teams based on merit. Let us have players selected not because of ethnicity, or political persuasion,” added Namwamba.

He observed that his flagship project Talenta Hela initiative is working with the success of the ISF football teams in China and the Junior Starlets who face Burundi in the World Cup Under-17 qualifier on Saturday as well as 48 athletic training camps around the country.

Namwamba said they are going to accelerate the budget for Kenya's Under-20 rugby team ahead of residential training for the World Under-20 Championship in Scotland next month.
