The family of the late Albert Ojwang received a total of Sh5,060,000 in funeral contributions, their lawyer Julius Juma has said.

Speaking during the requiem service at Ridgeways Baptist Church in Nairobi, Juma clarified that, contrary to claims circulating on social media, the family had not received Sh10 million.

“I have been asked by the family to set the record straight. The family received Sh2 million from President William Ruto, Sh1 million from Raila Odinga, and Sh2 million from Kenyans through public contributions,” he said.

Juma, speaking from the pulpit, said he was aware of the weight of his words and dismissed the misinformation as misleading.

“I know the consequences of lying. I speak with full knowledge,” he added.

He also took time to thank all those who supported the family during their time of grief, especially young people, whom he credited for spreading news about Ojwang’s death swiftly and widely.

“I want to thank the Gen Zs. You shared Ojwang’s story in less than an hour,” Juma said.

After Ojwang’s death in police custody, President Ruto called the deceased’s father, Meshack Ojwang, and offered condolences along with a Sh2 million contribution to support funeral expenses.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga later confirmed the donation during a visit to the family’s rural home.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also called Meshack to console the family and sent a contribution of Sh1 million.

Activist and comedian Eric Omondi led a separate campaign to raise funds for Ojwang’s young son and family.

The appeal was launched on the evening of June 10, and within hours, the M-Pesa account used for donations had reached the daily transaction limit.

The family says all contributions have been documented and appreciated, and they have no intention of misleading the public.
