20 schools expected for Cardinal Otunga Open tourney

More than 20 teams are expected to take part in the boys' only tournament

The annual Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho Open tournament this weekend has attracted 20 schools.

The tournament resumes after a 15-year hiatus. “After consultations with our chief principal Albert Ombiro, we decided to revive the tournament and it will be held annually,” said the school’s head of the games department, Obonyo Ombasa.

The exclusive boys’ tournament will feature football, handball, rugby 15s, volleyball and basketball. Teams will pay a participation fee of Sh3,000.

“This is like the inaugural edition and there are other tournaments in Nyanza so we expect 20 teams,” said Ombasa.

 Kisii School, Kibabii Boys, Agoro Sare and Nyamache Boys are some of the teams that have confirmed participation.

“We expect more teams to confirm their participation. However, I know some teams will turn up on Saturday without confirming. We expect a successful tournament,” he added.

At the same time, the Kisii County games clinic will be held from Thursday to Saturday at Sameta High School. 

Coaches and officials from various federations will facilitate the three-day clinic, which will feature various disciplines including hockey, basketball, handball, rugby, athletics, netball, football, volleyball, and racquet games.

Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Kisii Country Secretary Geoffrey Nyantika asked coaches and officials to turn up in large numbers for the clinic.

He said Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho will host the County Term One games on March 6-8. Term One Games will feature hockey, basketball, rugby 15s, handball and athletics.

The County Term Two games which include football, volleyball, netball, rugby 7’s, racquet games and 3x3 basketball will be held at Tendere playground and Sameta High School.

Kisii County will also host the Nyanza regional and national Term Two Games at Kisii School and Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho.
