Football traditionalists will witness a monumental chapter in World Cup history tonight as Portugal face Croatia in a high-stakes Round of 32 clash at Toronto Stadium.

The sudden-death encounter carries a poignant subplot, marking what is expected to be the final international tournament meeting between legendary captains and former Real Madrid team-mates, 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo and 40-year-old Luka Modrić.

Both European powerhouses advanced to the knockout stage after finishing second in their respective groups.

Portugal secured the runners-up spot in Group K following a mixed campaign that included a 1-1 draw against the DR Congo national football team, an emphatic 5-0 victory over the Uzbekistan national football team, and a goalless draw with the Colombia national football team.

Croatia, meanwhile, recovered from a 4-2 opening defeat to the England national football team by recording successive victories over the Panama national football team and the Ghana national football team to keep their World Cup dream alive.

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez is expected to retain his fluid 4-2-3-1 formation.

In possession, the structure transforms into an adventurous 3-2-5 or 2-3-5 shape, with deep-lying playmaker Vitinha controlling the tempo while the full-backs push high to stretch Croatia’s defensive line.

Without the ball, Portugal revert to a disciplined 4-4-2 block, with Bruno Fernandes joining Ronaldo in leading the press.

Diogo Costa is expected to start in goal behind a defence comprising João Cancelo, Rúben Dias, Renato Veiga and Nuno Mendes.

João Neves is likely to partner Vitinha in midfield, while Pedro Neto and João Félix provide width and attacking support.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić is expected to respond with a disciplined 4-3-3 system that shifts into a 4-2-3-1 in possession.

This allows Modrić to operate in a more advanced creative role, reducing his defensive workload.

Behind him, Mateo Kovačić and Petar Sučić will anchor the midfield.

Goalkeeper Dominik Livaković leads a defence featuring Josip Stanišić, Josip Šutalo, Marin Pongračić and Joško Gvardiol.

Out wide, Nikola Vlašić and Ivan Perišić will supply crosses for striker Ante Budimir.

Croatia’s game plan centres on resisting Portugal’s press while using a compact midfield block to deny central space and force play wide.

History strongly favours Portugal.

The two nations have met 10 times, with Portugal winning seven matches, while Croatia have managed only one victory, a 2-1 friendly success in June 2024.

Croatia have never beaten Portugal in a competitive fixture.

Their latest meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Nations League in November 2024.

Statistical models currently give Portugal a 54.5 per cent chance of winning in regulation time, compared with Croatia’s 20.4 per cent, while a 25.1 per cent probability is assigned to extra time.

Neither nation has lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy.

Portugal’s best finish remains third place in 1966, while Croatia have established themselves as consistent tournament performers, including finishing as runners-up in 2018 and in third place in 2022.

With a Round of 16 place awaiting the winners against either the Spain national football team or the Austria national football team, the stakes could not be higher.

Beyond tactics and statistics, all eyes will be on Ronaldo and Modrić as two of football’s modern greats prepare for one final shared World Cup stage.
