National Super League strugglers Mwatate United head coach Evans Mafuta has played down relegation fears, insisting his side is focused on climbing into the top half of the table.

“Relegation worries are not on our mind now. Our focus is to win all our remaining games and finish in a respectable position. That is our objective for the year,” said Mafuta.
The tactician said confidence is high in the Mwatate camp following back-to-back 2-1 victories over Vihiga United and FC Talanta to start the year.
“We want to keep the momentum because we have won our two games since the year started. All our second-leg matches will be like finals,” noted the CAF B-licensed coach.
Ahead of their weekend clash against on-form Soy United at Eldoret ASK Showground, Mafuta said his side will not be intimidated despite their opponents being on a three-match winning run.
“I know Soy United are on a good run and they are playing at home, but as Mwatate, we are travelling there for maximum points,” he said.
Mwatate currently sit bottom of the table with 13 points from three wins and four draws, having lost 10 matches. Mafuta, who previously guided APS Bomet to promotion, has overseen a major squad overhaul, releasing 15 players and planning to bring in an equal number during the current transfer window.
“I only retained 12 players from the team that won one game last year. I travelled with those 12 to Kisumu and beat Vihiga United,” he explained.
The club has already signed goalkeepers Moses Ouma and Derrick Siguna, alongside Noah Wanjala, Calvin Maree and Chris Baraza, with 10 more signings expected.
Meanwhile, Mombasa United climbed to third on the table after being awarded three points and two goals from their abandoned match against Gucha Stars.
The decision leaves Migori Youth top, with Michael Olunga Foundation Academy second as the promotion race intensifies.
