Gucha Stars players celebrate at Gusii Stadium/ANGWENYI GICHANAPromoted National Super League side Gucha Stars are in danger of losing several key players in
the mid-season transfer window.
On Friday, coach Sammy
Okoth told the Star that several players have been approached by SportPesa
League and NSL clubs.
They have
already lost key defender Hillary Wandera, who joined SportPesa League side
Administration Police Service (APS) Bomet.
“It’s a big
blow because Wandera was one of our key players. More players have been
approached. If they get good offers, especially to SportPesa League sides, we
will not stand in their way,” said Okoth.
Okoth said following
the uncertainties, they will beef up their squad when the NSL transfer window
opens on Monday. Among the players who are likely to depart is the club’s top
scorer, Vincent Nyabuto, who Fortune Sacco has approached. Nyabuto has
scored eight goals for the newcomers.
Speaking ahead of their tie against Nairobi City Stars on Saturday, Okoth said they are targeting maximum points against the former Premier League side.
“After the festive
season break, we shall have a different approach in all our games. Against City
Stars, we will go all out for the win,” said the experienced coach.
On his side, Nairobi City Stars head coach Salim Babu said his charges are ready to start the year with a win.
“We ended the year on a positive note. We want to pick up from
there. We will not underrate Gucha Stars because it’s a good side and they are
playing at home,” noted Babu.
He is impressed by his side so far.
“This is a team I started rebuilding from
scratch following the departure of several players after the team was relegated
to the NSL. So far, the new players have given a good account of themselves. I
will make some additions in the mid-season transfer window,” remarked Babu.
In another
game scheduled for Saturday, a resurgent Kisumu All Stars will host promotion-chasing
Fortune Sacco at Moi Stadium in Kisumu City.
On Sunday, leaders Migori Youth welcome a rejuvenated Kabati Youth at Awendo Green
Stadium, seeking to extend their lead at the top of the table, while second-placed
Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) host Equity Bank at Moi Stadium,
Kisumu.
MOFA coach
Charles Warinda said, “It’s our first match of the year against a good side. We must be prepared to control the game from the kickoff. We will do our best,
work hard, and try to win the game.”
Third-placed 3K FC will host Naivas at Moi Stadium in Embu.
Migori Youth lead the log with 29 points from 15 games, while MOFA are second with 27, the same as 3K.
