APS Bomet head coach Michael Nam is confident his side will make a lasting impression in their maiden Kenyan Premier League (KPL) campaign.
The newly promoted club secured their top-flight berth after finishing second in the 2023/24 National Super League (NSL), just behind champions Nairobi United. The promotion marks a historic moment for Bomet County, a region more renowned for producing world-class runners than football clubs.
Speaking during a pre-season training session in Bomet, Nam said his team is not just looking to survive, but to compete.
“We’re here to compete, not just participate,” Nam asserted. “The players understand what it means to represent Bomet at this level, and we’re working to ensure we can handle the pressure and intensity of the Premier League.”
To meet the demands of top-flight football, APS Bomet has assembled a comprehensive technical team. Evans Mafuta joins as assistant coach, Darshan Lubembe as team manager, Fredrick Onyango will handle goalkeeping duties, while Alfred Chole oversees fitness and conditioning. Ayub Said serves as a physiotherapist, with Bethuel Kipkorir managing media relations.
Nam believes the club’s strong backroom setup will be critical in bridging the gap between the NSL and the KPL.
Pre-season preparations have included friendlies against established KPL sides—part of a deliberate effort to expose players to the pace and tactical demands of the league.
“The boys are responding well,” Nam said. “They know the KPL is a different ball game, but they’re showing resilience and determination.”
The team’s promotion has sparked widespread excitement across Bomet County. Streets and villages are awash with green-and-white team colours, and local businesses have rallied behind the club.
Nam acknowledged the groundswell of support: “Our fans are incredible. Their energy will be crucial, especially during home matches. We want to make Bomet proud.”
Analysts agree that a strong home record and swift adaptation to the league's intensity will be vital for APS Bomet's survival. The club is banking on a blend of youthful talent and seasoned players to gain a competitive edge.
In the long term, APS Bomet is also investing in grassroots development. Youth programs are in the pipeline to nurture local talent and build a sustainable pathway for future stars.
Their rise adds a fresh competitive dimension to the KPL, expanding the league’s geographical reach and broadening its fan base. League officials have welcomed the club’s entry, noting that new teams bring renewed energy and inspire communities.
With the new KPL season fast approaching, APS Bomet is determined to make an immediate impact. While survival remains the top priority, Nam hinted at broader ambitions:
“This is a chance to show what Bomet football can achieve. We respect every opponent, but we won’t be intimidated. We’re preparing to surprise a few people.”
APS Bomet’s arrival in the Kenyan Premier League represents both a challenge and an opportunity. With Michael Nam at the helm and the backing of a passionate community, the debutants are ready to script a new chapter in Kenyan football.
