Newly appointed Harambee Starlets assistant coach Godfrey 'Solo' Oduor says they are satisfied with their opening 3-0 victory over Burundi in the Cecafa senior women’s tournament in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Solo, who took over from Jackline Juma last week as Beldine Odemba’s assistant, said the girls followed instructions and played according to their tactics to get their first win of the tournament at the Azam Sports Complex.

“We are satisfied with the result, and I am happy that we have good players put in a great shift to gain the desired results. The technical bench urges the players to keep the momentum going and win their remaining matches,” said the gaffer.

Vihiga Bullets striker Martha Amunyolet grabbed a first-half brace before Faith Mboya completed the beating in injury time to overcome the hapless Swallows, who had shocked defending champions Uganda 1-0 in the opening fixture on Friday 13, June.

Starlets who are at position 142 in the latest FIFA rankings were coming from a three-match losing streak in international friendlies. Kenya fell 5-1 to Morocco last week the back of an identical 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in April.

Solo said they will ensure the players have a good recovery session and check all the injuries and knocks ahead of their game against the Crested Cranes, who overcame South Sudan 5-0 in their second clash on Sunday 15, June.

“Some players are tired and in pain after playing 90 minutes. We have to ensure their knocks and injuries are well taken care of within a short time before  ahead of Uganda’s crested cranes tomorrow,” added Solo.

Starlets were captained by Turkish-based defender Vivian Nasaka in a relatively new squad that had debutants like Medina Abubakar, Tumaini Waliula, Martha Amunyolet  and Diana Wacera.

Meanwhile, Burundi head coach Alain Niyungeko said they lost to a better side, but pointed out that they did not get a training ground before the clash at the back following a difficult clash against Uganda.

He adds that his centre backs were porous, leading to conceding two quick goals, but they will rectify this before their clash against Tanzania on Tuesday, 17th June.

“Tanzania has a quality side, and we expect a tough game against the hosts in their backyard," said Niyungeko.

Burundi will battle Tanzania at 4 pm, before Kenya plays Uganda at 7 pm at the Azam Sports Complex in Dar es Salaam.
