Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat reckons his charges have begun cultivating a winning mentality following impressive outcomes in a sequence of contests.

The valiant Kenyan lads have astonished detractors with master-class acts against their more fancied opponents, including a two-all draw against Russia, and a 2-1 victory over Qatar in international friendlies.

In an interview on Tuesday, the outspoken Turkish coach noted that the Four Nations tournament in Lilongwe, Malawi, might infuse some energy into the group ahead of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers, which resume in June.

“I think we will have good results in June if I put the team together and have them mentally prepared,” Firat said.

“The crop of players we shall be having in June will be the most determining factor. We don’t have a large pool of players to choose from compared to teams like Senegal and Morocco.

“I believe it depends on the squad; if one or two players are out, it may have a significant impact on the team. We will be prepared if I combine them all,” he added.

Kenya will step up the search for a ticket to the premier quadrennial global spectacle against Burundi before taking the duel to the doorstep of Africa Cup of Nations champions, Ivory Coast.

The Stars had a torrid start to their qualification campaign, losing 2-1 to Gabon before bouncing back emphatically to thump Seychelles 5-0. They currently occupy the third spot on the six-nation standings.

According to Firat, a correct mindset will hand Kenya the edge they need to put their rivals to the sword. “There are two parts to this. The first is the tactical phase, in which we work as a cohesive unit to refine and advance the tactical plan. We also need to support our guys in strengthening their mental toughness,” Firat remarked.

Stars’ tactician maintained that his charges are fired up and ready to hammer away indefatigably for the nation’s dignity.

“Featuring for the national squad is a big honour and privilege for each player. Holding forte for the country is enough inspiration in itself,” he said.
