As the world marks World Food Safety Day on June 7, health experts are calling for greater awareness and action to ensure food safety across the globe.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, the day promotes safe food as a key driver of health and sustainable development. This year's theme, “From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere,” focuses on reducing the impact of foodborne diseases through practical solutions.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 600 million people fall ill each year after consuming unsafe food, while an estimated 420,000 die from foodborne diseases annually.
The observance also emphasises safe food handling, storage and stronger food safety systems, stressing that food safety is a shared responsibility for governments, businesses and consumers.
