Kenya Police boxing team head coach Dave Munuhe reckons his charges possess the mojo to crack a third consecutive title this year.
'Chafua Chafua' set their season in motion with a sterling performance in the first leg of the Kenya National Boxing League in Vihiga over the weekend to take unassailable command of the 13-team league.
The Nairobi-based law enforcers rose to the summit of the log with 30 points ahead of perennial arch-rivals KDF, who have amassed 26 thus far.
Kenya Prisons wrap up the top three with 11 points. Nairobi (eight) and Kibra (four) follow each other in fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Nakuru, Siaya and Vihiga counties have two points each while G44, Mbaraki, Kajiado County, and Busia County have registered a solitary point each. Kisumu, Homabay, and Trans-Nzoia counties are yet to bag any points.
Munuhe, who doubles up as the national team's assistant coach said he is confident they would replicate their form in the next leg planned for Siaya this week.
He lavished praise on the newly recruited young boxers who punched furiously on their way to victory.
"I was impressed by the team's performance and particularly the great character shown by our set of newly recruited boxers who fought well despite their tender age," Munuhe said.
The gaffer attributed their success to early preparations that enabled them to sharpen their talons adequately for the championships.
"We embarked on early training because we are determined to retain our title and we are aware our opponents will be coming for us in full force," Munuhe said.
Munuhe stated they have bolstered their ranks for the new season after roping in two fighters who have already proven their mettle in national team colours.
"We've brought in two new boxers to help steer us to another title this year, including heavyweight Robert Okaka who joins us from the Nairobi County boxing team," Munuhe said.
"Our ultimate goal is to clinch another title and we are convinced this is something we can achieve because we have done so in the past with a lot of success," Munuhe said.
'Chafua Chafua' stormed the 2022 Kenya National Boxing League title after racking up 133 points in Nakuru in December.
The national champions will hope to replicate their feat this year with a third consecutive title.
