Three people have been charged with smuggling 400 bags of sugar worth Sh3 million from a neighbouring country.

Police on September 22, intercepted the goods at the Kiluani area in Oloililai subcounty within Kajiado county during a night patrol. 

The bags of sugar were being transported in two trucks.

The owner of the goods was charged with the offence of being in possession of uncustomed goods, while the two truck drivers were separately charged with the offence of conveying uncustomed goods.

This is contrary to sections 199 and 200 of the East Africa Community Customs Management Act, 2004.

However, while appearing before Kajiado Law Court Senior Principal Magistrate Joseph Karanja, the three denied the charges.

The owner of the sugar was released on a bond of Sh300,000 while the truck drivers were each released on a bond of Sh200,000.

The cases will be mentioned on October 17, 2023.
