Rainfall
is expected across several parts of the country over the weekend, offering
relief to areas that have experienced prolonged dry conditions, the Kenya
Meteorological Department (KMD) has said.
In a statement
on Saturday, Met said rain is likely over Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the
Lake Victoria Basin, North-Eastern and North-Western regions, the South-Eastern
lowlands, and Central Kenya, including Nairobi.
The
department said the rainfall will be experienced alongside generally sunny
intervals in many regions, with showers occurring mainly in the afternoons and
at night in some areas.
However,
Kenyans in the northern parts of the country have been warned to brace for
strong winds.
“Heads up!
Strong southeasterly winds, exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s), are expected over Marsabit
and Turkana counties. Please take necessary precautions,” Met said.
Residents
in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions.
In its
earlier forecast covering the period from December 9 to15, the Meteorological
Department said most parts of the country were likely to experience sunny and
dry conditions.
Nonetheless,
occasional rainfall was expected in parts of the Highlands East and West of the
Rift Valley, the Rift Valley itself, the Coast, North-Eastern Kenya, and the
South-Eastern lowlands.
Daytime
temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius were forecast for the Coast,
North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya, as well as parts of the South-Eastern
lowlands, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley.
At night,
temperatures were expected to drop significantly in some regions.
Average
minimum temperatures of below 10 degrees Celsius were forecast in parts of the
Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, sections of the Rift Valley, and
areas near Mt Kilimanjaro.
Regional
outlook
In the
Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift
Valley, including counties such as Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisumu, Nakuru, Uasin
Gishu, Kericho, Bomet, Migori, and Narok, the department forecast sunny
intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night. Afternoon and
night showers are likely to occur in a few places.
North-Western
Kenya, covering Turkana and Samburu counties, is expected to experience sunny
intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights, with generally dry
conditions.
In the
Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kiambu,
Murang’a, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi, mornings are expected to be
cloudy with possible light rains in a few areas.
These
conditions will give way to sunny intervals, with occasional afternoon and
night showers.
North-Eastern
counties, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are forecast
to have sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights.
Morning
rains and afternoon showers may occur in isolated areas.
In the
South-Eastern lowlands, covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado,
Taita-Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River, sunny intervals are expected
during the day, with occasional showers in the morning, afternoon, and at
night.
The Coast
region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal parts of Tana
River, is also expected to experience sunny intervals during the day, with
chances of showers occurring at various times.
The Meteorological Department has advised the public, particularly farmers, transport operators, and those in wind-prone areas, to stay updated with daily forecasts and advisories as weather conditions continue to evolve.
