World 800m silver medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi wants the government to improve school playgrounds to help in the early development of talent.

The world mile record holder said many talented pupils and students fail to achieve their potential due to a lack of exposure in their formative years.

Speaking at Kosirai High School in Nandi County, the Rabat Diamond League winner said: “This field, just like many other facilities across the country, is just here to be seen. We train here but don’t know if it is standard and appropriate. We train here just because we love sports.”

“Athletes face many challenges, especially during morning sessions. There is no murram or tartan track and the morning dew damages our training shoes,” added the former world under 20 800m champion.

He said it’s a shame that the school does not have a training track despite producing some of the best runners in the country.

“This school has produced many talents and champions, like Abraham Kibiwot, Conseslus Kipruto and myself. We have so many students exploring athletics but are derailed by lack of training facilities,” he said.

Kosirai School principal-cum-coach, Paul Kosgey said Wanyonyi has been an inspiration to the rest of the students.

“Wanyonyi has been our best athlete since I took over. He has joined a list of top athletes who have come through this school,” he said.

Kosgey wants retired stars to offer motivational talks to schools and offer tips on how they can develop their talent.
