The Nyanza South track and field Championships cum Under-20 Trials will be held on Friday at Kisii University, regional chairman Peter Angwenyi has announced.
Angwenyi settled on Kisii University after inspecting the venue and Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho.
“Kisii University’s running track is in a better state as compared to Cardinal Otunga. We would have held this event at Gusii Stadium but it’s still under renovations. We are appealing to the County Government of Kisii to expedite the works,” said Angwenyi.
Angwenyi said the event is open for all athletes from Kisii, Nyamira and Migori Counties.
He, however, noted that pole vault, high jump, steeplechase, and hurdles will not be held due to lack of equipment. He added that they will select between 24 and 30 athletes.
Athletes from Athletics Kenya camps of Riooga, Keberesi and Kiendege have been invited to take part.
“Our focus is to expose the youth ahead of the National Under-20 Trials. We want more youths to seal places in the team that will travel to Nairobi for National Championships,” he added Angwenyi.
Angwenyi said he was impressed by athletes from Riooga and Keberesi who bagged medals during the Eastern Africa track and field championships a week ago at New Amani Complex in Zanzibar last week.
Riooga Secondary School’s James Gechuki bagged gold in the men’s 800m in the Under-20 category while Daniel Wasike won gold in the 200m and a bronze in the 400m Under-18 category. Keberesi’s Beatrice Machoka bagged gold in the 200m (Under-20 race).
At the same time, the Nyanza North track and field championships will be held at Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Saturday, regional secretary Thomas Ongwacho has announced.
