Kipchoge among World Athlete of the Year finalists

Kipchoge is the Berlin Marathon and Tokyo Marathon champion. He also improved his world marathon record to 2:01:09 while winning the Berlin Marathon.

World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge has made the final cut for the Men’s World Athlete of the Year Award.

Kipchoge is the Berlin Marathon and Tokyo Marathon champion. He also improved his world marathon record to 2:01:09 while winning the Berlin Marathon.

Others in the list include world indoor and outdoor pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis of Sweden, world 3000m steeplechase champion Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco, world 5000m champion  Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway and world 200m champion Noah Lyles of USA.

The five athletes, who represent five countries from three area associations, have achieved sensational performances across a range of athletics disciplines in 2022, at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22, World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade 22, one-day meeting circuits and other events around the world.

A three-way voting process determined the finalists whereby the World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family cast their votes by email, while fans logged their decisions online via the World Athletics social media platforms where a record 1.3 million votes were registered.

The World Athletics Council’s vote counted for 50 per cent of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and the public votes each counted for 25 per cent of the final result. The voting activity closed on October 31.

The World Athletes of the Year will be announced on World Athletics’ social media platforms in early December, as part of the World Athletics Awards 2022.
