The spotlight will be on six newly introduced disciplines when the 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two regional games get underway across the country today, ushering in a new chapter for school sports in Kenya.
Chess, scrabble, cricket, lacrosse, beach volleyball and baseball will feature on the KSSSA calendar for the first time as thousands of student-athletes compete for places at the national championships, set for the MPesa Foundation Academy in Thika from July 28 to August 1.
The regional championships, which begin today, will also serve as the qualifying event for the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games to be held in Morogoro, Tanzania, from August 12 to 23.
Alongside the newly introduced events, schools will battle for honours in football, volleyball, netball, basketball 3x3, rugby sevens, badminton, table tennis and lawn tennis.
Most regional competitions will be held this week. Rift Valley schools will compete at Narok High School from July 8–11, while Nyanza and Nairobi will stage their championships at Homa Bay High School and Jamhuri High School, respectively.
The Coast, Eastern and Western regions will host their games at Kwale High School, Makueni High School and Bungoma High School from July 8–11, while the Central region games will take place at MPesa Foundation Academy from July 9–11.
The regional phase concludes with the North Eastern championships in Tabaka, Mandera County, from July 20–22. The championships have received a major boost from KCB Bank, which last week unveiled a Sh20 million sponsorship package as the title and kit sponsor.
Of the sponsorship, Sh12 million will go towards the purchase of playing kits and trophies, as Sh8 million has been earmarked for fan engagement activities and activations during both the regional and national championships.
KCB Group Chief Risk Officer Faith Basiye said the partnership reflects the bank’s commitment to nurturing young talent through sport. “The sponsorship underscores KCB’s long-standing commitment to developing sports as a catalyst for nurturing future champions while creating opportunities for them to showcase their talent, build lifelong values and pursue excellence. As a Bank, we are proud to be part of this rich legacy.”
KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi welcomed the partnership, saying it would strengthen the development of school sports in the country.
“The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association appreciates KCB Bank for its continued commitment to the growth of school sports in Kenya. This sponsorship is a significant investment in our learners, providing them with an opportunity to compete, develop their talents and build values such as discipline, teamwork and resilience.”
