Action between Nyabisia Secondary and Mobamba Mixed during the county final/Angwenyi Gichana
Mobamba Mixed Senior School and Aluor Girls have thrown down the gauntlet ahead of the Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association Term Two games, which will take place at Homa Bay School and Ogande Girls from July 7 to 11.
Mobamba coach Kevin Obong’o announced that his team is eyeing regional glory.
After being eliminated in the semi-finals last year, Obong’o believes his squad has gained the necessary experience to challenge for the regional title and establish themselves as a force in Nyanza.
The three-time Kisii champions retained their title by beating Nyabisia in straight sets at Cardinal Otunga Senior School, Mosocho. Obong’o noted that the county championship was highly competitive, recalling that they lost 3-1 to Nyabisia in the group stage before strategizing to beat them in the final.
New champions will be crowned in the boys’ volleyball category following the elimination of Gogo Mixed in the preliminaries.
Gesiaga Mixed lifted the Nyamira County title on Monday after a straight-sets win (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) over Gekendo. Meanwhile, the Homa Bay County final between Oriwo Boys and Tom Mboya was postponed on Wednesday evening due to darkness.
For the regional tournament, Mobamba joins a tough Pool B alongside last year’s finalists St Mary’s School Yala, newcomers Maseno School, and Homa Bay’s second representatives, Oriwo Boys.
Migori County champions and favorites Masara headline Pool A, which also features Nyamira’s Gesiaga, Udira, and Homa Bay county champions Tom Mboya High.
In the girls’ category, Siaya County champions Aluor Girls are favorites to progress from Pool A, where they will battle former champions Nyakach Girls, Kameji, and Homa Bay’s second representatives, Saye.
The Homa Bay County final between Asumbi Girls and Saye was abandoned due to darkness while Asumbi Girls led 2-1. Consequently, Asumbi Girls enters Pool B as the Homa Bay County champions alongside defending regional champions Nyakongo, Sironga Girls, and Moteiribe.
Aluor Girls coach John Duro anticipates tough competition in the region but hopes his team will deliver the title.
Last year, Aluor lost 3-2 in the regional final at Kisumu Boys. Duro, a veteran coach who previously guided Sega Girls to the national championships, acknowledged they will likely face defending champions Nyakongo again at some stage, but emphasized that their focus this time is to beat every team they face.
