The Football Kenya Federation has announced a seven-day suspension of all league fixtures following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in Kerala, India, on Wednesday.

The suspension, covering the SportPesa Premier League, FKF National Super League, and FKF Women’s Premier League, coincides with the government’s declaration of a week of national mourning.

Raila, 80, was a prominent political figure and a longstanding advocate for Kenyan football.

In a statement, FKF expressed condolences to the Odinga family and the nation, stating: “We join the nation in mourning a great leader and a passionate supporter of Kenyan football. May his soul rest in peace.”

Flags across the country, including at State House, government offices, military bases, and diplomatic missions, have been lowered to half-mast as part of the official mourning period.

FKF President Hussein Mohammed praised Odinga’s commitment to sport, saying: “Kenya has lost a great leader who was an ardent fan of sports and its development in our country.”

Raila Odinga served as patron of Gor Mahia FC, one of Kenya’s most celebrated football clubs.

In a public statement, the club’s chairman Ambrose Rachier said: “It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I, on behalf of Gor Mahia FC, mourn our beloved Patron, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga.

“His passing is an immeasurable loss to our club, the sporting fraternity, and the nation. Raila Odinga was more than a patron; he was our pillar, a passionate supporter and a father figure.

“His unwavering dedication to Gor Mahia FC was unparalleled. His legacy is permanently woven into the fabric of Gor Mahia’s history. May his courageous and devoted soul rest in eternal peace.”

Raila's role went beyond ceremonial duties; he was actively involved in club affairs, providing financial and moral support, and guiding the club through successes and challenges.

His love for football was evident from his youth, when he played for Luo Union FC and Bunge FC.

Later in life, he devoted himself to supporting Gor Mahia FC and the national team, Harambee Stars.

He frequently attended matches, offered encouragement to players, and even incentivized victories.

Internationally, Raila followed Arsenal FC after an early allegiance to Manchester United.

A former Harambee Stars player remarked: “Raila Odinga was a true father of football in Kenya.

His guidance shaped careers and inspired generations of players.

His legacy will not be forgotten.” Odinga also championed football infrastructure and youth programs.

His vision culminated in the completion of the 20,000-seat Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay in May 2025.

The stadium is designed to host tournaments, provide training facilities for youth players, and strengthen regional football development.

Hussein Mohammed, FKF President, noted: “He believed in football as a tool for social cohesion and youth empowerment. His support for infrastructure and grassroots initiatives will have a lasting impact on Kenyan football.”

FKF has urged clubs, players, and supporters to observe the mourning period respectfully.

The federation confirmed that all postponed fixtures will be rescheduled once the suspension period ends.

The response to Raila's death has been widespread. Football clubs, players, and fans across Kenya have paid tribute to his enduring influence.

Many highlighted his personal involvement in nurturing talent and his advocacy for sports development: “He was a pillar of Kenyan football,” said a youth coach.

“Raila Odinga inspired players, built infrastructure, and elevated our clubs. His absence is deeply felt.”

Gor Mahia FC reinforced their commitment to honouring his legacy: “We commit to upholding the values and spirit he instilled in us,” Rachier said.

Raila Odinga’s impact extended far beyond the political arena.

Through sustained support for football clubs, youth initiatives and infrastructure projects, he contributed to the growth of sport in Kenya.

His vision and dedication created opportunities for young athletes and promoted national cohesion through football.

FKF concluded: “We honour Raila Odinga not only as a political icon but as a pillar of Kenyan football. May his soul rest in peace and may his vision for sports development inspire future generations.”
