Faith Achieng and Marvel Oswago have been named in the Kenya Lionesses squad for the Safari Sevens, set for this weekend at Nyayo Stadium.

Acting head coach Simon Odongo confirmed the call-ups as part of a broader strategy aimed at preparing the team for upcoming competitions, including the Africa Cup Sevens, which will be held at the RFUEA Grounds from November 14–17, and the World Sevens Series second division, scheduled for March 2026.

“Our focus is on building depth and allowing every player to perform at this tournament this weekend,” said Odongo.

Kenya will field two teams in the women’s competition: the Lionesses and a development side dubbed the Cubs. Odongo expressed confidence in the youthful Cubs squad, which includes nine new faces.

“It’s a very youthful team, and they will act as a feeder team to the main squad. They will bring lots of energy to the tournament,” he noted.

The Lionesses are aiming to reclaim the title after falling short last year, when they lost 24-10 to defending champions Costa Blanca in the final held in Machakos.

Despite being without experienced internationals such as Grace Adhiambo (in France), Stella Wafula, and Diana Owino (both in the United States), Odongo is confident the squad can rise to the occasion.

“We are without some of the stars, but it’s up to the selected players to deliver and fight for positions in the team ahead of the next two big tournaments we have,” said the Kenya Harlequin assistant coach.

Odongo also expects tough competition at the Safari Sevens, particularly from regional rivals and international guests.

“It will be an eye-opener to face Belgium, who we played in the Challenger Series last season. Uganda always bring their best when we face them, and Tunisia — we’ve trained with them a couple of times in the last three months — so it will be tough competition,” he added.
