Fresh off a strong showing at the Federation of East African Universities Sports Championship (FEAUS), Kisii University have turned attention to the Kenya Universities Sports Federation Western Conference (KUSFWE) championships, which begin this Saturday at Kabianga University.
Kisii’s women’s basketball team made headlines by dethroning USIU-A to lift the regional title, while the men’s football side settled for silver after a narrow 4-3 loss to Strathmore in a thrilling final.
Kisii games tutor David Obungu is optimistic about their prospects.
“I am happy with the performance of our teams during FEAUS. We won one title and finished second in men’s football. Our teams are now ready for the KUSFWE games this weekend in Kakamega,” he said.
The championships will feature rugby Sevens, badminton, frisbee, chess, scrabble and cross country.
At the FEAUS championships, Kisii stunned favourites USIU-A with a tight 31-29 win in the women’s basketball final. They routed hosts MMUST (Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology) 57-7 in the semifinals.
On their way to the football final, Kisii edged Kaimosi Friends University 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Strathmore overcame defending champions Makerere University 7-6 on penalties, having drawn 2-2 in regular time.
In other FEAUS results, Kenyatta University clinched the women’s football title in a round-robin format, ahead of Makerere University and USIU-A.
In men’s basketball, Daystar University claimed the title after beating Kenyatta University 57-52 in a fiercely contested final at Kakamega Police Canteen.
Kenyatta had edged Mount Kenya 64-63 in the semis, while Daystar defeated USIU-A 48-39. In the third-place play-off, USIU-A beat Mount Kenya 56-40.
