Rift Valley region giants St Joseph’s Boys’ Kitale were crowned the national secondary schools’ football champions as the Term Two games concluded in Kakamega on Saturday.
St Joseph’s — coached by principal Cosmas Nabongolo, beat Western region powerhouses Musingu High School 1-0 in a tense but entertaining final at Mumias Sports Complex.
Shadrack Kiboi scored the decisive goal in the 62nd minute after heading home a free kick from Rixon Simiyu. It was a second successive final loss for Musingu. They fell to Highway last year.
Highway, meanwhile, settled for the bronze medal after a 4-3 post-match penalty shoot-out win over Nyanza champions Agai Mixed.
They drew 1-1 after extra time. Butere Girls’ retained their football title after a 1-0 win over Western region rivals, Madira Girls’, at Mumias Sports Complex.
An early goal by Metrine Kitavi was enough for Butere Girls’ to secure their third title in a row. In the third place play off, debutants Nasokol Girls’ edged Kobala Girls’ 4-3 on post match penalties after the teams drew 1-1 after extra time at Kakamega High School.
Cheptil retained the boys’ volleyball title after seeing off Malava Boys 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-22) at Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology.
Debutants Mwaluphampa High from Kwale County finished third after beating Gogo Mixed 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23).
Kwanthanze Girls retained the volleyball title after a straight sets (25-17, 25-6, 25-16) win over East Africa champions Kesogon Mixed. Hosts Bishop Sulumeti Girls beat Soweto Academy 3-2 (21-15, 25-17, 19-25, 25-15, 15-13) in the third place play off.
Oyugi Ogango, coached by Cliff Omondi, retained the netball title for the third consecutive year. They defeated debutants St Joseph’s Girls’ Kitale 67-29 to retain their title.
St Monica Bukokholo was third and former champions Kaya Tiwi fourth.
Omondi said: “The final was easy. It was actually the easiest final we have played in three years.”
In basketball 3x3, Sigalalame lifted the boys’ title after seeing off Pioneer Schoool 17-12 while Buruburu Girls’ defeated Tigoi Girls 15-2.
