Amateur golfer Enock Ogembo is confident he can steer his team to the KCB East Africa Golf Tour Grand Finale trophy after steering his side to victory over the weekend in the 14th leg of the tour at the Nakuru Golf Club.
Teaming up with Eleanor Wambui, John Kibet and M.M. Macharia, Ogembo’s quartet carded a stellar combined score of 114 stableford points to emerge overall team winners in a field that drew 228 players. They edged out the team of Stephen Macharia, Micah Thuo, Javan Muriithi and William Kariuki, who posted a close 111 points to settle for second place.
Ogembo noted that the victory was due to having a strong competitive team. “I want to say that I am very happy for this win. We have been practising in preparation for today’s tournament. I have a solid team," he said. He exuded confidence in bringing the Grand Finale trophy to Nakuru. "We will be featuring in other tournaments to sharpen our skills. We will bring the cup home at the tour’s Grand Finale.”
In the individual categories, handicap 28 golfer Stephen Ibwaga stole the show with a superb 44 stableford points to clinch the overall winner's prize. He edged out handicap 19, Francis Wanjohi, who was crowned men’s winner after carding 41 points. Eleanor Wambui, playing off handicap 15, impressed in the ladies’ category with a 38-point haul to bag the top female prize.
Among staff players, Ibrahim Lande (handicap 11) emerged victorious with 39 points, narrowly beating handicap 25 Anthony Mulisa on countback. In the junior category, Cassius Pennington (handicap 21) scored 43 points to take top honours. The guest winner award went to Njoro Golf Club’s William Kariuki (handicap 17), who returned 41 points.
Dr. Terra Saidimu claimed the longest drive in the men’s category, while Florence Wafula powered her way to victory in the women’s contest. On Sunday, KCB hosted a junior golf clinic at the Nakuru course to nurture emerging talent, followed by a tree-planting initiative to promote sustainability in sports. The action continues Monday, with over 100 caddies expected to tee off in a special appreciation tournament organised by KCB at the same venue.
