Moi University will field seven teams in the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) games starting this Saturday at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kakamega County.

The institution will field both men's and women's teams in football, volleyball and basketball and women's hockey at the three-day festival that ends on Sunday.

“We have been preparing our teams for the playoffs because we know how good they are. As an institution, we are privileged to have the best players this time round," Moi University head of sports, Henry Were said.

After losing to Strathmore University in men’s volleyball last year, Were said they have rectified the mistakes and are ready to build upon the silver medal they won.

“We lost the men’s volleyball title due to simple mistakes but I believe we are currently on the right track,” added Were. Strathmore defeated Moi University 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-21) last year.

Were said Moi University are the best in women's football after dominating the region. “Moi University competed at the KUSF women's tournament two weeks ago and came home with the trophy. We used the event as a build-up for this weekend's show," he said.

The men's football team, who won bronze last year, will also be seeking to go a step up. “Going by last year's performance, we expect good performance from our players in various disciplines,” he said.

Were said their hockey team, who are KUSF Rift champions, also start favourites.  Last year, Strathmore Scorpions (men) and Gladiators (women) defeated MMUST sides in the final to claim the hockey titles respectively.

In women's volleyball, Strathmore beat Kisii in straight sets of 25-10, 28-26 and 25-16 in a thrilling final. Strathmore men and women scooped the basketball titles. Strathmore edged out Africa Nazarene 61-56 while Zetech beat Strathmore 48-21.

In women's football, MMUST defeated Kisii 5-4 in post-match penalties following a barren draw in regulation time.

In women's netball, Mt Kenya University floored hosts UoE 47-33 while MMUST beat Maseno to the men's title. KUSF Secretary General Joseph Sandagi confirmed they are ready to run the event.

“These will be serious championships because they are being played at the home of sports. There will be the likelihood of all teams coming here based on what we have so far,” said Sandagi.
