Namwamba: WRC safari rally must have Kenyan flavour

The championship, which returned to Kenya in 2021 after 19-years hiatus, is again set for Naivasha

Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba has said the World Rally Championship Safari Rally Series set for Kenya in June 22-25 must have a Kenyan flavour.

The championship, which returned to Kenya in 2021 after 19-years hiatus, is again set for Naivasha.

Speaking during the launch of the KCB sponsorship towards the event at Kencom, Nairobi, he said:  "This event is very international. We are part of an incredible global spectacle. As international as it is, this event  must have the unique, credible and a special Kenyan flavour," the CS said.

"It must be a strong, indelible, unmistakable and uniquivocal Kenyan flavour. The flavour must be recognised with Kenyan drivers in the mix," the CS added.

Reigning national champion Karan Patel, Nihil Sachania and Evans Kavisi are in the mix.

The first event of the 13-round championships started in Monte Carlo, January. WRC Rally Sweden took place in February. The series headed to Mexico in March for the Guanajuato Rally before proceeding to Croatia in April. WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal took place mid this month.

The Safari Rally was first held in 1953, as the East African Coronation Safari in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika as a celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
