A 20-year-old mother of twins is stuck in a city hospital after she failed to raise Sh360,000 medical bill.
Venessa Wamukota and her twins have been at Coptic Hospital for a month and two weeks now and her bill is still accumulating.
The hospital is demanding Sh179,170 and Sh183,590 for the children to be released.
The twins were admitted to the hospital when they were one-month-old.
Documents issued by the hospital to help her appeal for help dated December 16 show that Wamukota and the boys were admitted to the facility on November 20. They were discharged three days later on November 24.
The bill statement shows that Wamukota only managed to pay Sh100. She does not have an NHIF card.
A friend of her family, identified only as Belinda, told the Star that Wamukota had rushed her two children to a hospital in Kawangware after they both developed breathing complications.
But the problem was severe and the facility referred her to Coptic Hospital.
“It is possible that the overall bill has shot up to over Sh400,000,” the friend said.
Wamukota is unemployed and works as a construction worker at various sites in Nairobi.
Her family has tried to get a paybill number but a telco firm is said to have asked her to get a bank account first. She does not have one.
Wamukota can be reached on 0798875707.
