Wazalendo tackle Zamalek in ACCC opener

Wazalendo entertain Ghana Revenue Authority on Thursday and have a date with Tairat from Egypt in the hope of ending their Pool 'B' matches on a high two days later.

Kenyan representatives Wazalendo will look to break the dominance of North Africans when they take on Zamalek on Wednesday at the Theodosia Okoh Stadium, Ghana in the African Cup for Club Championships.

The South B-based side, who are making their debut in the continental championships slated for November 24-30, face tough opposition from Ghanaian and Egyptian teams in their quest for a maiden title.

Egypt, in particular, have been dominant with men's side El Sharkia winning a record 24 titles in the past 31 editions. They were victorious in the 2019 in both genders.

Ghana have established themselves as a hockey powerhouse in the last couple of years, slowly moving up to third in the Federation of International Hockey FIH rankings continentally as of November 2021.

Ghana Revenue Authority women's team beat Blazers formerly Telkom 1-0 in 2018 to lift their first ever title to underline their evolution.

Wazalendo, under the guidance of coach Ngungu Njogu, have Danston Barasa and Griffin Amukule — who are vastly experienced having played in Italy and Germany respectively — to provide confidence in the squad. Stanley Chege, Sutcliffe Usagi as well as Allan Munene are established members of the team too.

The playing contingent also includes: Solomon Murila, Job Odhiambo, John Otora, Esbon Nyong’a, Dan Obonyo, Dennis Burudi, Bonface Wemali, Cliff Omari, Joseph Ndegwa, Mathew Momanyi, Brian Sasha and Joseph Kasua.

The championships is making a comeback after a now-show last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. In the absence of El Sharkia, a new champion will be crowned. It is the men's 32nd edition and 23rd for the women.

Players will use the ACCC as part of their preparations for the African Cup of Nations slated for January 2022 also in Ghana.
