The national men's rugby Sevens team redeemed themselves with a 21-7 thrashing of Japan in a 9-12 qualification match at the Tokyo Olympics.

Shujaa had earlier lost 12-7 to Ireland in their last Pool  C encounter to all but dash their hopes of a shot at an Olympic medal. In a case of a deja vu, the Kenyans were caught faltering in the early stages of the match as two quick tries from Hugo Lennox and Harry McNulty propelled the Irish to a 12-0 lead by halftime.

The same script seemed to be repeating itself against the hosts when Japan took an early 7-0 lead before Kenyans recovered to take the game by the scruff.

However, tries from Alvin Otieno, Jeff Oluoch and captain Andrew Amonde secured the East Africans a date with Ireland for a final classification match.

It was another sad day in boxing for Kenya as Elly Ajowi and Elizabeth Akinyi bowed out of their respective bouts against Cuban and Mozambican opponents respectively.

Ajowi's heavyweight match against four-time world light heavyweight champion Julio La Cruz ended in a 5:0 win in favour of the latter.

Shortly after, Akinyi threw in the towel with a minute and a half of the second round to play, granting victory to Alcinda Helena Panguana by virtue of a technical knock out.

Kenya's third ever Olympian in taekwondo, Faith Ogallo, also suffered heartbreak as her debut ended in a 13:0 thrashing at the hands of Serbian Mandic Milica.

The country had something to smile about, however, as Danilo Rosafio won heat 2 of the men's 100m freestyle in 52.54. Jagger Stephens of Guam finished second in 52.72 whereas Grenada's Delron Felix finished third in 52.99.

All eyes will be on the women's national volleyball team as they take on South Korea in their second pool A encounter later this evening.
