Sony Sugar coach Andrew Ongwae yesterday refused to rule out chances of the team returning to the Kenya Premier League next season despite a stuttering start in the National Super League.

Speaking after guiding Sony to their first home win of the season, Ongwae said: “We have not had a good start but today’s win will spur the boys to do well in upcoming matches. We want to target maximum points at home.”

On Sunday, Sony edged visiting Modern Coast Rangers 2-1 at the Simeon Nyachae Stadium in Kisii.

Ongwae added: “Last week, we travelled to Mwatate with 13 players after several players left to other teams to try their luck. With the transfer window opening, we will beef up the team.”

He said they are targeting a top-three finish in the National Super League.

Modern Coast coach Ahmed Mohammed said his players had a good game but they were punished by Sony who utilised their chances.

“I can’t complain about how my boys played. We conceded two goals due to a lapse in concentration. This is not the result I wanted. However, we now focus on the next game,” said Mohammed.

He hinted that they will look to strengthen the team in the current transfer window.

“We shall sit down with the management and see the number of players we can sign because I have seen some weaknesses in some departments,” he said.

At Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, Shabana suffered their second loss on the trot after succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against newly-promoted Soy United while Kisumu Hot Stars lost 1-0 against Murang’a Seal at St Sebastian Park.
