For many years, Nairobi’s grooming scene has been defined by neighbourhood barber shops and salons offering quick haircuts and standard personal care services for a broad customer base.

That landscape is now gradually shifting, with a growing number of establishments targeting a more niche clientele of urban professionals seeking longer, more curated grooming experiences.

One of the latest entrants in this space is The Urban Duke, a membership-based men’s grooming and lifestyle facility located along Riverside Drive in Nairobi.

The facility officially opened on May 23 during an invitation-only launch that brought together business executives, creatives, diplomats and figures from Nairobi’s lifestyle scene.

The opening marked the introduction of a concept that leans towards private grooming experiences, with emphasis placed on personalised service and controlled, quiet environments away from the typical bustle associated with conventional barbershops.

Inside the space, guests were received into an interior designed with subdued lighting, leather finishes and lounge-style seating. The layout is structured to create a quieter atmosphere, positioning grooming as a more extended experience rather than a quick service stop.

Among those present at the launch were actor Nick Mutuma, motivational speaker Robert Burale, as well as entrepreneurs and other invited guests.

Founded by Roda Omar, The Urban Duke describes itself as a private gentleman’s grooming and lifestyle institution.

The idea, according to the founder, emerged from what she views as a gap in services tailored to professional men who have upgraded other aspects of their lifestyles but still rely on conventional grooming setups.

“This is not about vanity,” Omar said during the launch. “It’s about a man walking out of here knowing that every detail is right — and that matters when he’s walking into a boardroom, a negotiation, or a room full of people who notice everything.”

The facility offers a range of services including precision haircuts, beard grooming, facials, scalp treatments, and hand and foot care. Clients access the services through subscription-based membership packages branded as The Gentleman’s Classic and The Sovereign Club.

During the opening event, guests toured the facility, sampled selected services and participated in discussions centred on men’s wellness, confidence, and evolving perceptions around grooming and personal care.

The launch comes at a time when conversations around self-care among men in urban Kenya are slowly expanding, with grooming increasingly being linked not just to appearance, but also to professionalism and personal presentation in competitive work environments.

Rather than the traditional walk-in barber model, The Urban Duke is positioning itself around scheduled appointments and membership access, a structure that reflects a broader shift in parts of the city’s service economy toward exclusivity and experience-based offerings.

The founders say they are targeting at least 200 verified members within the first three months of operations as they seek to establish a foothold in Nairobi’s growing market for lifestyle-oriented personal care services.

There are also plans to introduce executive grooming concierge services, which would allow members to access selected services outside the facility, including at offices, homes and hotel rooms.

Beyond grooming, the business is also looking at potential collaborations with brands in the luxury automotive sector, private banking and other high-end lifestyle industries as part of its broader positioning strategy.

As Nairobi’s lifestyle and wellness industry continues to evolve, spaces such as The Urban Duke reflect a growing segment of professionals who are increasingly seeking personalised, time-conscious services that go beyond the traditional barbershop experience, and align more closely with curated urban lifestyles.
