Murang'a women lead in having sex outside marriage – Report

Narok County on the other hand leads in number of men having sex outside marriage.

A report released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has recorded that  Murang’a County has the highest percentage of women who had two or more sexual partners in the last 12 months.

This consists of about 11 per cent of women aged between 15 to 49.

Counties with the lowest percentage of sexual partners include  Mandera, Tana River and Kwale counties with less than one per cent each.

KNBS states that Narok County has the highest percentage of men who had the most sexual partners which result in about 43 percent in the last  12 months.

"Narok County has the highest percentage of 43 percent of men aged 15 to 49 who had two or more sexual partners in the last 12 months, while Kirinyaga, Kericho, and Garissa counties have the lowest per cent of less than two per cent," the report read.

The report further states that the percentage of women aged between  15 to 49 who had intercourse in the last 12 months with a person who was neither their husband nor lived with increases with the level of education.

This was from seven per cent among those with no education to 27 percent among those with secondary and above education.

While those of men increased from 20 per cent among those with no education to 43 percent among those with secondary and above education.

"The percentage of men aged between  15 to 49 who had intercourse in the last 12 months with a person who was neither their wife nor lived with increases with the level of education from 20 percent among those with no education to 43 percent among those with secondary and above education," the report wrote.

The 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (2022 KDHS) was implemented by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other stakeholders.

Data was collected from February 17 to July 31, 2022. The sample for the 2022 KDHS report was drawn from the Kenya Household Master Sample Frame (K-HMSF).

The sample size was computed at 42,300 households, with 25 households selected per cluster, which resulted in 1,692 clusters spread across the country, 1,026 clusters in rural areas, and 666 in urban areas.

It was also done through a questionnaire where they used the household questionnaire, the woman’s questionnaire, the man’s questionnaire, and the biomarker questionnaire.
