Bums, booty and the passion for ass

Brazilian butt lift surgery has become popular in Kenya with ladies aiming to have a 'bigger' butt going for it.

In an interview with Spice FM, Dr Esther Gathura plastic surgeon shared her views on the issue.

A Brazilian butt lift is a specialized fat transfer procedure that augments the size and shape of the butts without implants.

Dr Gathura, however, notes that women are doing dangerous things to their bodies to get the procedure done.

"I heard word on the streets that people are even injecting themselves with Royco. People are doing very strange things," she said.

According to Healthline, normally the procedure is usually performed under anaesthesia, but in procedures where a smaller volume of fat is transferred, it may be done with only local anaesthesia (numbing medication).

Revealing how dangerous the surgery can be Dr Gathura said the procedure has been deemed as risky procedure back in the UK.

She states that with the Brazilian butt lift, there is a risk of infection and one might appear to look uneven.

"They take fat where you don't want to where you want. What people don't know is because it's fat and it is natural, you can't control it," Gathura said.

"The body resorbs some of it so one might end up looking a bit uneven. And there is nothing you can do and you can't blame the doctor."

As a result, one has to keep going back for the procedure and get the desired result.

Healthline states that at times there is a failure of your buttocks to take up the grafted fat stores.

A certain amount of the fat injected is broken down and absorbed by the body. Sometimes you may need an additional one or two procedures.

Another risk is that one can die from the procedure.

"There is complication people need to consider, and I’m not saying you need to be scared. The complication is that people have died, one in 30,000 die from Brazilian butt lift surgery and you don't want to be the statistics," Dr Gathura said.

Another risk of the procedure she highlighted was that the fat can get into the blood vessels and block the flow of blood.

Healthline states that when the procedure is performed incorrectly, injected fat can enter the large veins in the buttocks, and then travel to the lungs. This causes respiratory distress and ultimately death.

In addition, Dr Gathura said that women who want the procedure should go for someone who is licensed.

"I don't have experience in it and I’m just from the UK and it was deemed as a risky procedure and a lot of doctors were not even getting insured to do it," she said.
