It would be nice if dating had the recurrent nature of the World Cup

For the longest time, sports has been dominated by machismo and fuelled by testosterone. It’s in the nature of men to enjoy scuffles, I guess.
This year, though, I read some place that the football World Cup tourney might break the record for most female fans. A lot of men find this gross invasion into their territory intimidating. I, on the other hand, consider it quite intriguing.
First, the tournament is being held in the least romantic section of our planet. Hanky-panky in Qatar, a strict Muslim country, could land you in jail. Second, football uniforms have come a long way since Pele played in those truly short shorts. So, I guess we can take “sexy” out of the equation. So, why are so many women interested?
Passion, is my guess. The fervour that comes with waiting for four long years for something that lasts a mere month. The cyclical nature of sports makes it interesting. So what if your team missed the playoffs by a single point? There’s always next year, right?
Maybe romantic relationships should be the same. Maybe there should be something to look forward to every so often. I’m inclined towards something like the plot in the movie The Purge, where one day in a year, all crimes are legalised, including murder.
For one 24-hour period, people let loose their passions and all bets are off. Maybe I’d be interested in marriage, where, after a set period, all those entangled in romantic situationships are permitted to let their dogs out, so to speak.
Besides a horde of companies making oodles out of merchandising (I can foresee “I’ve been eyeing you all year” cards accompanying flowers from secret admirers), folks stuck in boring affairs would have something fascinating to look forward to.
Not to mention the rekindled embers that come with jealousy. You know how your ex always looks hotter no matter how much you want to lie to yourself? Especially whenever you see him or her with someone else? Now imagine that with someone you know will come back to you after.
Anyway, don’t mind me. Maybe I’m just looking for ways to entertain myself now that all my favourite teams seem to be losing.
