THE Migori government is buying 150 dairy cows to be given to farmers early next year.
The second phase will begin in January to February.
The government will also purchase 50 zebu bulls to be given to residents of Nyatike subcounty to improve indigenous stock and increase milk production.
Governor Okoth Obado said the programme will increase food security, boost milk production and improve nutrition.
He spoke while distributing the animals in first phase early this year.
“Our intention is to ensure we have the very best for our people. Dairy farming is one of the most important practices that we can’t avoid. It will also boost our economy,” he said.
Some 102 cows have already been given out and farmers are benefitting from the milk production.
Susana Nyamatara, 78, earns her living by selling milk from her free dairy cow.
“I get 35 litres from the cow I received from the county government. I sell this at nearby trading centres and keep some for domestic use,” she said.
County livestock development director Jackline Magero said the project will help poor farmers across the county. She said clusters of 10 farmers each have been formed in seven subcounties. Each cluster gets one dairy cow.
“We have formed four clusters in every ward and every cluster is given one animal. This gives a total of four animals per ward. In seven subcounties it gives a total of 150 cows across the county,” Magero said.
The county government has also provided motorbikes to the livestock extension officers to provide medical services and give technical advice to farmers.
