The matatu conductor arrested for hanging dangerously on a PSV a few days ago has opened up about life in the industry.

The man going by the name Katana lives in Umoja and got candid about his humble background.

Speaking to YouTuber Eve Mungai, Katana described the viral moment  and how it led to trouble.

He said that he was a school drop out but his passion  for matatus started at a young age

"Nikiwa mtoi, I love matatus so much,  I would see matatus and ask my mum if she would ever own one. Nilikuwa napenda mathree kitu mbaya sana."

He got an opportunity to be in a matatu immediately he finished high school as part of the crew. He joined college but would drop out over problems.

He was studying for a degree in petroleum geo science.

"Nilikuwa jamaa tuu wa kupigia seti nalipisha bahati nzuri bahati mbaya unapewa mbao and sometimes at the end of the day I would earn a hundred bob."

He described how fun he found the job opportunity.

"Badi nilikuwa nasoma yes, lakini nilikuwa natoka hivi mtaani watu wenye wana dunda ni madonda, wamepiga look wanafanya nini unajua?"

He admired how those makangas made the job look and so he wanted such an opportunity for himself.  He felt that was the best way ya kuomoka (make it in life).

"After ukisha kua teenie, that's when you begin to see things are not easy. Life shows you you can do any kind of job and if it doesn't work you go to another plan the easiest way pout. That is the option I went with. It's easy money, ni pesa ya haraka, little did I know this easy money would end up in my arrest."

He had a big vision for his career doing the matatu job while also getting a job at Art Cafe which he lost owing to covid.

"You can't just say I depend on matatu to earn a living. I just have this love for matatus that will never end."

He loves "the whole vibe" adding "hiyo rush" is what he loves about matatus.

"Kuna rush flani. especially kitu cool kitu deadly, kitu authentic kuna rush flani hapo. Every job has its fun part."

He has also done Uber as a hustle; "It was also tough because of curfew at the time, so I didn't make money coz the owner wanted his take and I also wanted mine but there was no biashara enough to make the extra money."

Katana also opened up about the hanging dangerously incident saying,  "We were headed to town from Umoja, lakini it all started from town."

"It was a Saturday , umepiga luku ni super Sato ni siku kuu dinga ilibamba, ilobeba haraka."

It was good business for a weekend job. The booming business and the hype of the vehicle led to the stunts we witnessed in the viral video.

"Me and my boy we placed a bet like we unaweza? The bet was to see who hang the best, mastingo."

He placed a shb200 bob bet for the winner.

"Hiyo ni pesa mzuri sana for drinks after work. I was confident I would win the money. My friend did a style that left me impressed and i decided to do better."

On their way back to town, the CBD is when they took the hype to another level.

"I decided he would not win the bet and did the flip style that you see on the video. I knew he couldn't do that move coz he is not light like me."

He added the passengers were not upset about his antics as they were also hyped.

He added that he knew hanging was an NTSA offence.

"Even if my actions were bad its not something the Government could pick from there, hatuna wira, tumesoma hapa nje lakini ni vile ..so gava uiinaweza pick something out of that but badala ya criminalize yes nilifanya blunder kwa kuhang ivo dangerous suicidal."

The police arrested him while he was in his house.

"I had been in panic mode because people had been sending me these videos and I would be suspended. I had a hangover and in the morning. My friend texted me that cops were looking for me. I  told him to let me get ready I meet him."

But before he could leave there was a knock on the door. He opened it and saw cops and immediately knew he was to be arrested . He left with the cops

"Najua ngori yangu hakuna haja ya kufanya ati...nikama nilikuwa natoroka."

That was on a Monday, he was jailed and the following day was taken to court to answer to charges.

Katana was charged with riding dangerously with no uniform and charged Sh30k fine.
