Students at the University of Nairobi

The country witnessed a good number of students securing themselves slots in the university and colleges last Saturday when the Education CS released the 2021 KCSE results.

For quite some time, students forget easily the intense meaning of careers selection.

The largest number of students used to compete for courses like engineering, medical sciences, commerce, and leaving out secretarial and even hotel management courses.

The case is different due to high competition, this academic year being short, it will close down on many still in celebration moods.

Such are critical moments when students need to sit with their respective parents to get the best courses.

Besides, they can see an academic counsellor who will help them to settle on careers that pay off later.

In many scenarios, we have witnessed children doing courses they don't have an interest in for claims of parents influencing them.

This is the future of the children and should be allowed to express themselves without feeling that they are contradicting the opinions of their parents.

Guardians and parents have a chance to help in this process. However, the child stands a better chance to settle on a course of their desire.

Wrong choices will have a great negative impact on the performance of the child.

Whether still in school or even at work, they won't genuinely perform since it wasn't their choice.

It, therefore, calls for proper guidance before setting out to pursue a certain course.

Many students who pick courses of their choice always perform exemplary.

They have the inner drive and great focus to achieve their goals.

On the contrary, the others are working to satisfy their parents and might end up depressed.

The world is first changing and career guidance presents an opportunity for self-reflection.

One should check on their ambitions, interests and the necessary qualifications.

Individual abilities help them relate to what the world offers.

They are also exposed to the labour market and different education systems.

Consequently, it's an opportunity to explore other courses that might be of great interest and value than your earliest preferences.
